State Health Council Schedules Meeting - 4/17/2014
The State Health Council, the advisory body of the North Dakota Department of Health, will meet Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at 9 a.m. in Room 212 in the Judicial Wing of the State Capitol Building in Bismarck, N.D. Anyone who needs special accommodations for the meeting should call the Department of Health at 701.328.2372.

Emergency Order Issued to TENORM Handler - 4/17/2014
In order to protect public health and safety, on April 17, 2014, the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) issued an emergency order to Dyad Environmental, LLC, to secure its TENORM handling facility near Killdeer, cease all operations, and allow NDDoH personnel access to the facility to verify compliance with the order.

Pipeline Leaks Production Fluid in Billings County - 4/12/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a fluid spill in Billings County approximately 10 miles south of Medora. Continental Resources reported that approximately 560 barrels of production fluid leaked from a pipeline into a dry drainage, and subsequently some of the material reached a flowing drainage. Approximately 100 barrels of fluid have been recovered.

Tioga Responds to Possible Compromise of - 4/11/2014
On April 10, Tioga officials became aware of a possible compromise of the water system at an apartment complex in Tioga. Officials were told that chemicals, possibly including antifreeze, may have been introduced into the complex’s water system to thaw water lines. Tioga officials have notified the 20 affected individuals at the complex of the possible chemical exposure.

Contractor Selected for Cleanup of Filter Socks in Noonan - 4/8/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has selected the Next Generation Solutions – Secure Energy Services to properly dispose of the filter socks that were illegally dumped in an abandoned gas station in Noonan, N.D. Estimated cost for the project is $12,595. Cleanup will start as soon as possible and is estimated to take one to two days to complete.

Correction to Immunization NR - 4/3/2014
A sentence in the news release entitled “Change in Vaccines Required for Seventh Grade Students Next Fall” was misleading, making it appear that the Tdap vaccine protected against meningitis. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. The meningitis vaccine is a separate vaccine. Both are required for seventh graders.

Change in Vaccines Required for Seventh Grade Students Next Fall - 4/3/2014
Students must now receive the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) and the MCV4 (meningococcal conjugate vaccine) vaccines to begin the seventh grade, Schwartz indicated. These requirements are in addition to previously-required immunizations. Parents are urged to check with their child’s healthcare provider or local public health unit to make sure their immunizations are up to date well before school starts this fall.

The North Dakota Department of Health is commemorating World TB Day on March 24th, the date in 1882 on which Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis (TB). To this day, TB remains a leading cause of illness and death worldwide. World TB Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness about TB-related problems and solutions, and to support worldwide TB control efforts.

Small Oil Spill Impacts Stock Pond - 3/11/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a loss of six to ten barrels of oil from a well pad owned by Continental Resources.

The oil reached a stock pond near the well pad. The spill is located approximately 14 miles northwest of Killdeer. The owner of the stock pond has been notified of the spill.

Brine Release Reported North of Dickinson - 2/27/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a pipeline leak near Highway 22 just north of Dickinson on a well pad owned by C12 Energy. Approximately 148 barrels of brine flowed off the well pad and through a ditch onto newly annexed land on the north side of Dickinson. The brine has not reached the Dickinson storm water system.

Higher Rates of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Reported in N.D. - 2/24/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) is reporting an increase in the number of confirmed sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases. Cases of gonorrhea and syphilis have risen, according to Lindsey VanderBusch of the Division of Disease Control at the NDDoH. Statewide data show that the number of cases of syphilis has risen from 15 to 24 since 2012. The number of cases of gonorrhea has increased from 340 cases to 471 cases since 2012.

Oil Pipeline Damaged in McKenzie County; 400 Barrels of Oil Released - 2/14/2014
On February 13, the North Dakota Department of Health was notified of a release of oil from a pipeline in western North Dakota. An underground pipeline owned by Targa was struck and damaged, causing the pipeline to leak approximately 400 barrels of crude oil. Most of the oil was contained in a trench being dug at the pipeline site.

Higher Rates of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Reported in North Dakota
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) is reporting an increase in the number of confirmed sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases. Cases of gonorrhea and syphilis have risen, according to Lindsey VanderBusch of the Division of Disease Control at the NDDoH. Statewide data show that the number of cases of syphilis has risen from 15 to 24 since 2012. The number of cases of gonorrhea has increased from 340 cases to 471 cases since 2012.
