Source Water Spill Reported in Bowman County - 10/31/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a 400 barrel spill of water used for enhanced oil recovery at a well owned by Denbury Onshore in Bowman County approximately six miles south of Marmarth. The spill reached an unnamed drainage.

Leaking Pipe Leads to Produced Water Brine Spill in McKenzie County - 10/9/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health received a report of a produced water brine leak caused by a corroded pipe connection at a well site owned by Oasis in McKenzie County. Approximately 1000 barrels of brine were estimated to have been released at the site, which is approximately 11 miles northwest of Arnegard. Much of the produced water brine was contained and recovered on the pad, but an unknown amount spilled over onto adjacent land and impacted a nearby stream.

The North Dakota Department of Health has confirmed three additional case of hepatitis C related to the outbreak in Ward County. To date, 50 cases have been identified as part of the outbreak. The newest cases were identified as a result of the department’s active investigation in the area.

Enterovirus D-68 Confirmed in a North Dakota Resident - 9/22/2014
A confirmed case of Enterovirus D-68 (EV-D68) has been identified in a child from Stutsman County, according to the North Dakota Department of Health. She was hospitalized with a respiratory illness that caused difficulty breathing, cough and wheezing. The patient is no longer hospitalized and recovered at home.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) received a report of a spill in Burke County approximately 9 miles northeast of Powers Lake at a site owned by Oasis. approximately twenty barrels of oil and five barrels of produced brine water were released as a result of an equipment failure. The spill impacted a wheat field and a wetland.

Rabid Kitten Part of a Litter of Stray Kittens Found in Minot - 9/11/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health and the State Veterinarian’s Office are alerting the public that the rabid kitten identified in Minot was from a litter of six kittens that was found as strays around the 600 block on 10th Ave SE in Minot. The other five kittens in the litter have been located and have tested negative for rabies. The rabid kitten was a brown long-haired tabby (striped) male that was approximately eight weeks old. Any individuals who may have been bitten, scratched or licked by this kitten from August 22 through August 29, 2014, are asked to call the North Dakota Department of Health at 701.328.2378.

Spill Impacts Tongue River - 7/11/2014
On July 10, the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) was notified of a spill in the Tongue River in Pembina County. NDDoH personnel will be following up on the spill. A crew from Enbridge Energy was performing a boring operation near Bathgate and inadvertently released drilling fluid into the Tongue River. Approximately 12 barrels of drilling fluid was released in the spill, and a turbidity curtain was deployed.

West Nile Virus Identified in Grand Forks Mosquito Pool - 7/9/2014
The Grand Forks Mosquito Control program reported to the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) that they have identified a mosquito pool that has tested positive for West Nile virus in Grand Forks County. This is the first indication that West Nile virus (WNV) has been transmitted to mosquitoes in 2014 in North Dakota. The NDDoH urges people to take steps to avoid contracting the potentially serious disease.

On July 7, the North Dakota Department of Health received a report of a spill caused by a lightning strike and subsequent fire at the Helling Alexander SWD#1 salt water disposal site approximately three miles south of Alexander. ... The fire caused a failure of the primary containment system. Approximately 649 barrels of oil and 2813 barrels of brine were released.

On July 5, 2014, the North Dakota Department of Health received a report of a light-colored discharge from the storm sewer outfall on 19th Street north of Century Avenue in Bismarck. The drainage leads into Hay Creek, although it is not clear at this time whether the discharge has reached Hay Creek. The department has collected samples and is in the process of analyzing the material in their laboratory in Bismarck.

The spill occurred as a result of a tank overflow. Initial estimates indicate approximately 258 barrels of brine were released, all of which have been recovered.

The North Dakota Department of Health announced today that a resident of central North Dakota has died recently from complications of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a rare disease spread by infected rodent droppings, urine and saliva. Oil Pipeline Damaged, Oil Spill Reported - 6/7/2014
A pipeline trenching operation accidentally damaged a Belle Fourche Pipeline in McKenzie County, causing approximately 300 barrels of oil to escape the pipeline, according to the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH). Most of the oil was confined to the trench, and no bodies of water were affected by the spill.

Spill Reported at Oil Gathering Site - 6/7/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a spill of crude oil from an underground pipeline leading into a tank facility site approximately 14 miles northeast of New Town. The pipeline is owned by Bridger Pipeline.

Approximately 690 barrels of crude oil leaked from the pipeline and was completely contained on site within perimeter dikes. Approximately 640 barrels have been recovered and further clean-up efforts are underway.

The spill occurred as a result of a failed pipe fitting. Initial estimates indicate approximately 1000 barrels of salt brine were released, with approximately 100 barrels escaping the site into a neighboring wetland.

Lightning Destroys Salt Water Disposal Site in Williams County - 6/3/2014
A lightning strike early the morning of June 1 caused an explosion, fire and release of fluids from the Belle Salt Water Disposal site approximately 12 miles northwest of Williston, according to the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH). The site is owned by Oasis Petroleum and was completely destroyed in the incident.

West Nile Virus Surveillance Activities Begin in North Dakota - 6/2/2014
On June 1, 2014, the North Dakota Department of Health – in conjunction with several local, state, federal and private agencies – began the coordination of West Nile virus surveillance activities. Surveillance activities include reporting and testing sick horses and other domestic animals, trapping and testing mosquitoes, monitoring illness in humans, and reporting and testing dead birds.

State Health Department Schedules Opportunity for the Public to Learn About and Comment on Emergency Preparedness Activities - 5/27/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health has scheduled a public meeting to educate the general public about emergency preparedness activities and provide opportunity for public comment. The meeting will be held June 4, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. CST. The meeting will be based in Bismarck, but the public will be able to participate through teleconference by dialing 1.866.888.3385. The public also can participate through videoconference at participating local public health units throughout the state where videoconference is available, or the meeting can be accessed online via live web cast.

Fluid Release Reported at Lake Sakakawea Tributary - 5/23/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of the presence of a petroleum product release on Sand Creek approximately 3.5 miles south of Charlson in northwestern McKenzie County. The product has not been positively identified, but appears to be associated with a pipeline leak and may involve fluid associated with natural gas or crude oil. Initial estimates indicate approximately 10 barrels were spilled at the site, with 10 to 20 gallons reaching the water. Sand Creek eventually drains into Lake Sakakawea, and the fluid is located approximately 13 miles from the lake.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has identified an additional case in the hepatitis C outbreak investigation. The total number of individuals infected in this outbreak now stands at 46....“Because this case presents a slightly different history than the prior cases, it may provide additional clues about where this infection originated and how it has been passed between individuals,” according to Tracy Miller, State Epidemiologist. “We are undertaking an extensive investigation into the medical history of this patient and circumstances around this case in the hope of furthering our understanding of this outbreak,” Miller added.

Brine and Oil Spill in Divide County - 5/21/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a spill involving brine and oil at a site operated by Samson Resources Company. On May 19, Samson reported that a valve on a saltwater disposal well failed, causing brine to spill over into tanks containing oil. Some of the oil and brine breached the containment barriers and escaped from the site, reaching a nearby farm field and shelter belt.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has approved a remediation plan for the site of a pipeline leak near Tioga that occurred in September 2013. Tesoro is responsible for this remediation project.
Tesoro notified the Department of Health of its intent to implement a remediation plan to address soil contamination at the Tioga site. The department-approved remediation plan includes site preparation, equipment staging and other remediation activities directed toward excavating and treating oil-contaminated soil.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a fluid spill in Billings County approximately 10 miles south of Medora. Continental Resources reported that approximately 560 barrels of production fluid leaked from a pipeline into a dry drainage, and subsequently some of the material reached a flowing drainage. Approximately 100 barrels of fluid have been recovered.

Tioga Responds to Possible Compromise of - 4/11/2014
On April 10, Tioga officials became aware of a possible compromise of the water system at an apartment complex in Tioga. Officials were told that chemicals, possibly including antifreeze, may have been introduced into the complex’s water system to thaw water lines. Tioga officials have notified the 20 affected individuals at the complex of the possible chemical exposure.

Change in Vaccines Required for Seventh Grade Students Next Fall - 4/3/2014
Students must now receive the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) and the MCV4 (meningococcal conjugate vaccine) vaccines to begin the seventh grade, Schwartz indicated. These requirements are in addition to previously-required immunizations. Parents are urged to check with their child’s healthcare provider or local public health unit to make sure their immunizations are up to date well before school starts this fall.

A sentence in the news release entitled “Change in Vaccines Required for Seventh Grade Students Next Fall” was misleading, making it appear that the Tdap vaccine protected against meningitis. The Tdap vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. The meningitis vaccine is a separate vaccine. Both are required for seventh graders.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has been notified of a pipeline leak near Highway 22 just north of Dickinson on a well pad owned by C12 Energy. Approximately 148 barrels of brine flowed off the well pad and through a ditch onto newly annexed land on the north side of Dickinson. The brine has not reached the Dickinson storm water system.

Higher Rates of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Reported in N.D. - 2/24/2014
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) is reporting an increase in the number of confirmed sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases. Cases of gonorrhea and syphilis have risen, according to Lindsey VanderBusch of the Division of Disease Control at the NDDoH. Statewide data show that the number of cases of syphilis has risen from 15 to 24 since 2012. The number of cases of gonorrhea has increased from 340 cases to 471 cases since 2012.

An underground pipeline owned by Targa was struck and damaged, causing the pipeline to leak approximately 400 barrels of crude oil. Most of the oil was contained in a trench being dug at the pipeline site.

Higher Rates of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Reported in North Dakota
The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) is reporting an increase in the number of confirmed sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases. Cases of gonorrhea and syphilis have risen, according to Lindsey VanderBusch of the Division of Disease Control at the NDDoH. Statewide data show that the number of cases of syphilis has risen from 15 to 24 since 2012. The number of cases of gonorrhea has increased from 340 cases to 471 cases since 2012.
